Nena, Jacob (1941- )

Micronesian politician, president 1997-99. In May 1991 he became vice president of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and took over as acting president in November 1996, after President Bailey Olter had suffered a stroke. He formally became president in May 1997.

Born in Lelu, in Kosrae state, Nena studied public administration and business management at the University of Hawaii. His early political career was in his home state of Kosrae, of which he became governor, on independence in 1979.
