Nenagh

Town in northern County Tipperary, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 6,100. It is situated 18 km/11 mi northeast of Killaloe and 8 km/5 mi from Lough Derg. The principal industry is pharmaceuticals. Nenagh Castle is a Norman circular keep built around 1200 by Theobald Fitzwalter, an ancestor of the Earls of Ormond. The upper part was restored in 1860.

Nenagh has the ruins of a Franciscan friary founded in the 13th century, and there is a heritage centre in the heptagonal governors' house of the old county jail. The ruins of the Augustinian Tyone Abbey, founded in 1200, are 2 km/1 mi southeast of Nenagh, and 6 km/4 mi east, at Rathurles, is a ring fort with the ruins of an early gatepost and a 15th-century church inside.

Yesterday James McInerney, 22, of Lacey Avenue in Templemore, appeared before Nenagh District Court charged with assault causing serious harm to 56-year-old James Snr.
Tarablaze Richie Harding, who partnered Paul Kristian at Dromahane, was also in the saddle when the Kayf Tara gelding Tarablaze earned favourable mention first time out at Nenagh last month.
