Nenets Autonomous Okrug

District within Arkhangelsk oblast (region), northwestern Russian Federation; area 176,700 sq km/68,224 sq mi; population (1996) 48,000 (60% urban) (66% Russian, 12% Nentsy (Samoyed), 10% Komi). The capital is Naryan-Mar. The district is in the extreme northeast of the East European plain, bordering on the Barents and Kara seas. The terrain is flat and marshy, with tundra as the main vegetation, and there is extensive permafrost. The principal river is the Pechora. Industries include coal mining, canning, wood processing, extraction of oil and natural gas; fishing, hunting, and reindeer breeding. The district was created in 1929, and elevated to an autonomous okrug in 1977.
