Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Nenni, Pietro (1891–1980)

Italian Socialist politician. He was secretary general of the Italian Socialist party 1944–63 and in 1947 became leader of the main body of the party which refused to participate in the Christian Democrat prime minister Alcide De Gasperi's government. After the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956, Nenni broke with the Italian Communists and in 1964 supported the government formed by Aldo Moro. This led to a further split within the party, and in the elections of 1968 Nenni's faction lost votes heavily.
