Nentwig, Franz Ferdinand (1929– )

German bass-baritone. He made his debut at Bielefeld in 1962, as Ottokar in Der Freischütz. He has sung widely in Germany and appeared as Amfortas at Venice in 1983. Other Wagner roles include Telramund (Metropolitan Opera House, New York, 1984), Hans Sachs (Japan, 1987), and Wotan in the first Polish production of the Ring (1989). He made his London debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 1985, as the Music Master in Ariadne auf Naxos. He appeared at the Salzburg Festival in 1987, as Schoenberg's Moses. Other roles include Rigoletto, Mozart's Count and Dr Schön in Lulu.
