Neosho River

River in Kansas and Oklahoma; length 740 km/460 mi. It flows in a generally southeasterly direction before joining the Arkansas River at Muskogee.

The Neosho rises in Morris County, east-central Kansas, and flows southeast through the artificially created Council Grove Lake and past the city of Emporia. Its course then takes it through the John Redmond Reservoir near Burlington, to Iola, where it turns south to run past Chanute and into northeastern Oklahoma. It then continues southeast past Miami and enters the long, irregular Lake O' the Cherokees (in the area that was settled by the Cherokee people at the end of the Trail of Tears). Finally, from this lake it winds south through the Fort Gibson Reservoir to the Arkansas River.
