ness

Geographical term signifying promontory. Names with this suffix are common in the Orkney and Shetland Islands, on the coast of Caithness, Scotland, and along the east coast of England as far as Dungeness in Kent. It has been suggested that its use may indicate Scandinavian colonization, naes being its Nordic counterpart.
