Unspent income, after deduction of tax, put aside through bank deposits or other financial schemes offering interest to savers on their deposits. In economics a distinction is made between investment, involving the purchase of capital goods, such as buying a house, and saving (where capital goods are not directly purchased; for example, buying shares as a way of earning an income).
The savings rate depends on many factors, such as interest rates, inflation rates, unemployment rates, and expectations for future earnings.
