Nesterenko, Evgeny (1938– )

Russian bass. He made his debut in Leningrad in 1963, as Gremin. He performed in Moscow at the Bolshoi Theatre from 1971. In 1973 he sang Boris with the Bolshoi company in Milan, a role he repeated at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York in 1975. He returned to La Scala in 1978 for Verdi's Philip II, a role he also sang at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for his London debut in the same year. Other roles include Ruslan, Méphistophélès, and Don Basilio. He is often heard in Shostakovich's 14th symphony.
