Neubrandenburg| Town in the Land (administrative region) of Brandenburg, Germany, on the River Tollense, 113 km/70 mi north of Berlin; population (2005 est) 68,200. There are engineering, chemical, and paper industries in the town. Between 1359 and 1471 Neubrandenburg was capital of the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Stargard. It has an 18th-century palace and medieval churches and walls. |
| The old town is surrounded by an almost complete circuit of fortifications (probably late 13th century), together with town gates. There are museums of history and prehistory. |
