Neues vom Tage| Opera by Hindemith (libretto by M Schiffer), produced in Berlin at the Kroll Opera on 8 June 1929, conducted by Klemperer. The opera was condemned by Goebbels in 1934: ‘in their eagerness to make a sensation atonal musicians exhibit naked women in the bathtub on stage in the most obscene situations’. (Exactly 50 years later Peter Hall's wife, Maria Ewing, took a nude bath in the Glyndebourne production of Poppea.) |
