Neumann, Václav (1920–1995)

Czech conductor. He studied at the Prague Conservatory and was a violist with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra; he became deputy conductor in 1948, and was principal conductor from 1968. He worked at the Komische Oper, Berlin, 1956–64 where he conducted the Felsenstein production of Janáček's The Cunning Little Vixen. He gave the first performance of Cikker's Play of Love and Death (Munich, 1969) and was music director of Stuttgart Opera 1969–72.
