Neves, Tancredo de Almeida (1910–1985)

Brazilian politician. He was elected Brazil's first civilian president in 21 years in 1985 but died before his inauguration.

Neves was an ex-minister of justice and a member of the Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (MDB; Brazilian Democratic Movement). He was a skilled politician who managed to create an alliance with dissidents from the military's own party. This enabled the reform of political life by allowing direct elections. In January 1985, military rule came to an end, with the proclamation of the new republic and Neves was elected president. Following the his death, his vice president, José Sarney, assumed office as president.
