Nevinson, Christopher Richard Wynne

    0.02 sec.

Nevinson, Christopher Richard Wynne (1889–1946)

English painter and graphic artist. He made striking use of a Futurist style in paintings of the Western Front during World War I. His later paintings and etchings, which often employ elaborate allegory, are in a more traditional style.

After studying art at the Slade School, London, and in Paris, he became a friend of the Italian writer Filippo Marinetti, the founder of Futurism, and in 1914 they published ‘Vital English Art: An English Futurist Manifesto’ in the Spectator. Nevinson was appointed a war artist in 1917. His war pictures rank with those of Paul Nash, though some met with official disapproval.

His autobiography, Paint and Prejudice, appeared in 1937. Nevinson's work is represented in the British Museum; Imperial War Museum; Tate Gallery; Birmingham, and other city art galleries; and also at Harvard University, Massachusetts.
