New Braunfels

City and seat of Comal County, in south-central Texas; population (1990) 27,300. It is located on the Comal and Guadalupe rivers, 48 km/30 mi northeast of San Antonio. Part of the city also lies within Guadalupe County.

Sponsored by Prussian noblemen, New Braunfels was settled in 1845, and for a brief period was an almost exclusively German community. It is situated in a region where ranching, dairy farming, and limestone quarrying are prevalent. The city itself contains various light manufacturing industries and a number of medical facilities. Its German heritage is celebrated in various annual events. Nearby springs, caverns, and hill scenery attract visitors to this region.
