New Brighton

Historic district in the north of Staten Island, New York City. New Brighton is situated on the Kill van Kull, immediately west of St George. Developing initially as a resort in the early 19th century, it later became the site of shipyards and factories, whose wealthy owners built imposing residences on the district's terraced hillsides.

The industrial heyday of New Brighton is long past. Nowadays, the neighbourhood is characterized by a mix of small businesses, apartment houses, and a few remaining mansions. Sailor's Snug Harbor Cultural Center is situated here. West New Brighton, more popularly known as West Brighton, is of a similar character.
