New Canaan

Town in Fairfield County, southwestern Connecticut, standing 11 km/7 mi northeast of Stamford, on the New York border; population (1990) 17,900.

New Canaan is an affluent suburb of Stamford, and also a well-known centre for the arts. The renowned Silvermine Guild of Artists (founded 1922), which was established in a nearby village on the Silvermine River developed from one of the first artists' colonies in the USA. Several business corporations have located their headquarters in the New Canaan area.
