New Castle County

Administrative district of northern Delaware; area 1,026 sq km/396 sq mi, population (1990) 441,900. The county is bordered by Pennsylvania to the north, Maryland to the west, the Smyrna River to the south, and the Delaware River to the east. Its seat is at Wilmington.

New Castle County is crossed by the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, the Christina River, and the Brandywine, Red Clay, and White Clay creeks. Its principal agricultural activities are dairy, poultry, and livestock farming, and the cultivation of corn. Commerce and industry are active in the Wilmington area.
