New CriticismIn literature, a US movement dominant in the 1930s and 1940s, stressing the autonomy of the text without biographical and other external interpolation, but instead requiring close readings of its linguistic structure. The major figures of New Criticism include Allen Tate, John Crowe Ransom, and Robert Penn Warren. The term was coined by J E Spingarn in 1910. |
