New Glarus

Village in Green County, southern Wisconsin; population (1990) 1,900. New Glarus lies on the headwaters of the Little Sugar River, 38 km/24 mi southwest of Madison.

New Glarus was settled by Swiss immigrants in 1845, and is now well-known as a tourist centre. The settlement's Swiss heritage is recalled in its reconstructed Historical Village, site of an annual festival. Cheese and other dairy goods and items of embroidery are made here.
