New Glasgow

Town in Pictou County, north-central Nova Scotia, Canada; population (1991) 9,900. It is situated on East River, 16 km/10 mi southeast of the seaport of Pictou and 126 km/78 mi northeast of Halifax. New Glasgow was a coal, steel, and shipbuilding centre in the 19th century, and built railway cars early in the 20th century. It continues to produce brick and tile, tires, furniture, pulp, and wood products, and is a regional commercial centre. Some working coalmines remain in the surrounding area.
