New Haven County

Administrative district of southwestern Connecticut; area 1,580 sq km/610 sq mi, population (1990) 804,200. Situated on Long Island Sound, the county has its seat at the city of New Haven.

New Haven County is largely a manufacturing and commercial region, with some agriculture. Tourism revenue is generated by resort areas along the Sound. Industrial centres include New Haven, Waterbury, Wallingford, Naugatuck, and Meriden. Dairy and fruit farming, the growing of market-garden produce, and fishing are other important economic activities undertaken here.
