New Hyde Park

New Hyde Park

Village within North Hempstead town, Nassau County, southeastern New York State; population (1990) 9,700. It is situated immediately east of the Bellerose district of Queens.

New Hyde Park was part of a manor granted in 1683 to Thomas Dongan, royal governor of New York. The property was subdivided after his death, but continued to attract settlement by wealthy residents. After the Revolution, the village – then known simply as Hyde Park – became more agricultural. By the 19th century, its name had been changed to New Hyde Park, to avoid confusion with the town of Hyde Park in Dutchess County, upstate New York. Nowadays, New Hyde Park is a middle-class suburban residential community.
