New Kensington

City in Westmoreland County, southwestern Pennsylvania, on the Allegheny River, 23 km/14 mi northeast of Pittsburgh; population (1990) 15,900.

Built on the site of a Revolutionary War fort, New Kensington was founded in 1891. In 1931, it absorbed the neighbouring town of Parnassus. Since 1892, it has been one of the world's leading producers of aluminium; it also manufactures petroleum and electrical products, steel, glass, and textiles, and has industrial research and development centres nearby.
