New Liskeard

Town in Timiskaming District, eastern Ontario; population (1991) 5,400. New Liskeard is situated at the northwestern end of Lake Timiskaming near the Québec border, and 130 km/80 mi north-northwest of North Bay.

Founded in the late 19th century, New Liskeard developed after the arrival of the railway in 1905 as a service centre for the fertile Little Clay Belt. Today it is principally a resort for hunting, fishing, and lake activities, and also lies in a mining region (centred on Cobalt, immediately to the south). Local industries include dairy farming, forestry, canning, and the production of wood pulp. A college of agricultural technology is sited here.
