New London

Port city in New London County, southeast Connecticut, USA, on Long Island Sound at the mouth of the Thames River; population (2000) 25,700. Industries include submarine production, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals. Tourism is also important. New London is the home of the US Coast Guard Academy (1876) and Connecticut College (1911).

Settled 1646 as part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, it served as a privateering base during the American Revolution and a whaling centre during the 1800s. An important base for ships during World War II, New London is still a naval base. The annual Yale-Harvard crew races take place on the Thames.
