New London County

Administrative district of southeastern Connecticut; area 1,733 sq km/669 sq mi, population (1990) 255,000. New London County is situated on Long Island Sound, next to the border with Rhode Island.

Fishing, oyster catching, shipping, and shipbuilding have long been major industries here. More recently, the area has been a major defence supplier, with the Electric Boat submarine shipyard in Groton the largest employer in the county. Tourism is also an important industry; the introduction of casino gambling in Ledyard in 1992 has helped boost this sector of the economy.
