New Market

Town in Shenandoah County, northwestern Virginia; population (1990) 1,400. It is situated just west of Massanutten Mountain, and 26 km/16 mi northeast of Harrisonburg.

New Market serves as a base for tourists visiting the nearby Endless Caverns and Shenandoah Caverns. Harrisonburg was the site of an important Civil War battle, fought on 15 May 1864, at which Confederate forces under John C Breckenridge defeated a Union army under Franz Sigel. In winning this victory, the Confederates gained control of the vital summer grain harvest in the Shenandoah Valley.
