New Milford

Town in Litchfield County, northwestern Connecticut, on the Housatonic River, 19 km/12 mi north of Danbury; population (1990) 23,600.

Settled in 1707, New Milford now manufactures metal and electrical goods and silverware. It is also a commercial centre, and some agriculture takes place in its environs. The township, parts of which retain a rural character, includes Gaylordsville and several other villages, as well as part of Candlewood Lake.

New Milford

Borough in Bergen County, northeastern New Jersey; population (1990) 16,000. New Milford is on the Hackensack River, 6 km/4 mi northeast of Hackensack.

The area was settled in 1667 by French Huguenots, who purchased land from the indigenous Tappan people. New Milford was the point at which George Washington's army crossed the Hackensack during its retreat from Fort Lee to Trenton in 1776. The present-day borough was created from three settlements in 1922. Today it is an almost entirely residential suburb.
