New Model Army

Army created in 1645 by Oliver Cromwell to support the cause of Parliament during the English Civil War. It was characterized by organization and discipline. Thomas Fairfax was its first commander.

It was only technically dissolved in March 1660, though in reality it had been replaced by the Rump Parliament after the New Model Army "Pride's Purge" of 1648 barred about half its members.
The author of the Hervey novels takes the New Model Army, the professional soldiers fighting for Parliament in the Civil War, as his starting point.
