New Norfolk

New Norfolk

Town in southwest Tasmania, 36 km/22 mi northwest of Hobart; population (1996) 5,300. Current industries include hops, sheep, and cattle farming.

European settlement began with the relocation of settlers from Norfolk Island after the settlement there closed in 1807. It was known as Elizabethtown until 1825. The area quickly became established as an agricultural area. In the 1860s hops were introduced to the region and became an important crop.
