New Paltz

Town in Ulster County, southeastern New York State; population (1990) 11,400. It lies on the Walkill River, 16 km/10 mi west-northwest of Poughkeepsie and immediately east of the Shawangunk Mountains. The town is the site of the State University of New York College at New Paltz (founded 1828).
