New Philadelphia

City and seat of Tuscarawas County, in east-central Ohio, on the Tuscarawas River, 32 km/20 mi south of Canton; population (1990) 15,700.

New Philadelphia is situated in an area of coal, sand, and clay deposits. Local manufactures include tools, machinery, ceramics, plastics, and construction equipment. A major state flood control project has its headquarters here, and the city is the site of a branch of Kent State University. The first European settlement in Ohio, the village of Schoenbrunn, lies just south of the city. To the north is the site of Fort Laurens, the state's only fort from the time of the Revolutionary War.
