New Rochelle

Town in Westchester County, New York; population (1992) 67,600. It is situated on Long Island Sound, 26 km/16 mi north-northeast of Manhattan. New Rochelle is a residential and commercial suburb of New York City with some light industry, including the manufacture of chemicals, metals, and clothing. It is home to Iona College (1940) and the College of New Rochelle (1904).

The town was settled in 1688 by French Huguenots (French Protestants) seeking religious freedom; city records were kept in French until 1828. The English political writer Thomas Paine lived here from 1802–06.
