New Technology Telescope

Optical telescope that forms part of the European Southern Observatory, La Silla, Chile; it came into operation in 1990. It has a thin, lightweight mirror, 3.38 m/11.75 ft across, which is kept in shape by computer-adjustable supports to produce a sharper image than is possible with conventional mirrors. Such a system is termed active optics.
