New Waterford

Town in Cape Breton County, in the far east of Nova Scotia; population (1990) 7,700. It is situated on Cape Breton Island, near the entrance to Sydney Harbour.

New Waterford was once the main coal producer in eastern Canada, with deep workings that extended out under the sea bed. With the decline of coal as an energy source since the 1960s, the town's economy has suffered. A coal-fired power station is located here, along with a large fishing fleet.
