New Westminster

City in Greater Vancouver Regional District, southwest British Columbia, Canada, at the mouth of the Fraser River, 25 km/15 mi southeast of Vancouver; population (1991) 43,600. It was the capital of the colony of British Columbia 1859–66. It is connected by railway to Vancouver. After development of the docks 1921, it became one of Canada's main ports. An administrative and trade centre, it has been an important port and industrial and marketing centre, with lumber and paper, distilling, brewing, shipbuilding, oil refining, grain storage, and food processing industries. The Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame is in the city.
