New York Times, The

US newspaper, established as a penny paper in 1851 and aimed at an educated, cultured readership. It began as a paper for New York but has grown into a world-respected daily newspaper, distributed nationally, renowned for its objectivity, broad coverage, and excellent reporting. Its famous slogan ‘All the News That's Fit to Print’ first appeared in 1896.

Adolph S Ochs bought the controlling shares of the paper in 1896, and it still remains in his family. His great-grandson, Arthur Sulzberger, Jr, has been publisher since 1992. In 1971, amid great controversy, the newspaper published the Pentagon Papers, a secret study conducted by the US government of its involvement in the Vietnam War. The US Supreme Court ruled that the Times' publication of the papers was protected under the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

The newspaper's offices moved to Long Acre Square, at 42nd and Broadway, in 1905, and shortly after the square's name changed to Times Square.
