Newberg

City in Yamhill County, northwestern Oregon, on the Willamette River, 32 km/20 mi southwest of Portland; population (1990) 13,100.

Newberg is a market, processing, and distribution centre for produce and manufactured goods from the area, including fruit, nuts, paper, and machined wood. The city was founded in 1869 by Quakers, the group's first settlement in the Pacific Northwest. It is the site of the Quaker institution George Fox College (founded 1891). The Hoover–Minthorn House Museum (1881) here is situated in US president Herbert Hoover's boyhood home. Some 8 km/5 mi to the southeast, Champoeg State Park marks the site of the 1843 vote by settlers of Oregon Territory to break with the British Hudson's Bay Company and orient their provisional government instead towards the USA.
