Newberry

Town and seat of Newberry County, in west-central South Carolina; population (2000) 10,600. Newberry is situated in the Piedmont, 61 km/38 mi northwest of Columbia.

Newberry was founded in 1832. The town is a gateway to Sumter National Forest, and trades in cereals, cotton, and lumber. Granite quarries, dairy farms, and market gardens are located in the vicinity. The Presbyterian institution Newberry College (founded 1856) is situated here.
