Newburgh

Seaport and royal burgh in Fife unitary authority, Scotland, situated on the South Deep channel of the Firth of Tay, 17 km/11 mi north of Glenrothes; population (2001) 1,950. Oilskins and linoleum are manufactured, and boat-building and salmon fishing provide further employment.

Newburgh

Town in Warrick County, southwestern Indiana, located on the Ohio River, 14 km/9 mi east of Evansville; population (1990) 2,900.

Newburgh was settled in 1803; many of its early buildings have been preserved and renovated in a noted historic district. It is the site of an aluminium plant, and produces a variety of other manufactured goods, including concrete and processed foods.

Newburgh

City in Orange County, southeastern New York; population (2000) 28,300. It stands on the west bank of the Hudson River, opposite Beacon, and 93 km/58 mi north of New York City. Newburgh served as the final headquarters of George Washington in 1782–83; it was here that he officially disbanded the Continental Army.

Settled in 1709 by Germans from the Rhineland Palatinate, Newburgh was given its present name following an influx of English and Scots in 1752. The Hasbrouck House, where Washington stayed during his time here, has been preserved as an historic site. In the 19th century, the city developed as a whaling port, and as a transshipment point for coal from Pennsylvania to New England. It is now a market and distribution centre for a dairy-farming and fruit-growing region. Industries manufacture textiles, clothing, electronic components, aluminium products, bricks, tiles, plastics, and cosmetics. Stewart Field, an Air Force base that ceased operations in 1970, is now Stewart International Airport; it lies west of the city, in Newburgh township (population 24,100). Newburgh is home to Mount St Mary College.
