    0.02 sec.

Newcastle, William Cavendish (1592–1676)

English soldier, a Royalist. During the Civil War he won Yorkshire for the Royalists by the victory of Adwalton Moor in 1643. In the same year he captured Hull, but in 1644, after the rout of Marston Moor, he went abroad. He returned to England at the Restoration and was created Duke of Newcastle by Charles II in 1665.

Cavendish wrote a number of dramatic works and plays. His second wife, Margaret (c. 1625–1673), wrote a life of her husband in 1667.
