Newcastle Propositions

In English history, humiliating demands presented by the Scots and Independents to Charles I 14 July 1646. They included demands that Charles abolish bishops, sacrifice his supporters, and allow parliament to monitor both the army and foreign affairs for 20 years. Charles was reluctant to give an answer as he could not afford to reject the Scots outright, but equally could not accept a climbdown of this scale. The Scots grew impatient, and handed over the king to parliament before withdrawing over the border.
