Newcastle West

Newcastle West

Market town in County Limerick, Republic of Ireland, 40 km/25 mi southwest of the city of Limerick; population (2002) 3,500. In the centre of the town is a ruined castle that was built in 1184 for the Knights Templars (Order of St John) and later passed to the Earls of Desmond.

The castle remains include two 15th-century halls, one of which (Desmond Hall) has been restored and is used as a cultural centre.
