Newcombe, John David (1944– )

Australian tennis player who won seven Grand Slam singles titles including Wimbledon in 1967, 1970, and 1971. Predominantly a serve-and-volley player, he also excelled at doubles and won a record 17 Grand Slam men's doubles titles, all but five in partnership with fellow Australian Tony Roche, plus two mixed doubles titles. He played in 15 Davis Cup ties between 1963 and 1976, winning 16 out of 23 singles matches and 9 out of 11 doubles. He was non-playing captain of Australia's victorious 1999 Davis Cup team, the sixth time that Newcombe had helped Australia to win the trophy.
