Newington

Town in Rockingham County, southeastern New Hampshire; population (1990) 1,000. Newington lies on Great Bay and the Piscataqua River, just west of Portsmouth.

The town's economy was once heavily dependent upon nearby Pease Air Force Base, a huge military installation (covering 17 sq km/6.5 sq mi) that was operational from 1956 to 1991. Pease was home to the 509th Bombardment Wing, a heavy bomber and aerial tanker unit, but its closure at the end of the Cold War left Newington with an uncertain economic future. In the mid-1990s, the site began to be cleared of hazardous waste in the hope of attracting industrial investment.

Newington

Community in Fairfax County, northeastern Virginia; population (1990) 18,000. Newington is situated on Interstate 95, 11 km/7 mi southwest of Alexandria, and immediately northwest of Fort Belvoir. It is primarily residential.
