Newman, Alfred (1901–1970)

US film composer. From the 1930s to the late 1960s, Newman worked prolifically on virtually every genre of film, spending some 20 years in midcareer at the Twentieth Century Fox studio. His many Academy Awards include those for Song of Bernadette (1943) and Love Is a Many Splendored Thing (1955).

Newman's plangent theme from Street Scene (1931) became a leitmotif in several Fox crime movies of the 1940s, notably Kiss of Death (1947). His ‘Ann Rutledge Theme’ from Young Mr Lincoln (1939) was reused by director John Ford for his The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962).

He worked on more than 200 film scores and received nine Academy Awards.
