Newport

City and port in Rhode Island state, USA, 48 km/30 mi south of Providence; population (2000) 26,500. Situated at the southern end of the island of Aquidneck in Narragansett Bay, it has a good harbour, and has been a fashionable summer resort since the 1850s. The settlement was founded in 1639 by William Coddington of Providence.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, wealthy northern industrialists such as the Astors and Vanderbilts built mansions along the coast, many of which are now museums. Other notable features include the Naval War College (now a college of continuing education), the America's Cup yachting races, and the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Newport grew as a shipping centre, and served as a naval port until the 1970s. Much of the original settlement was destroyed by the British during the Revolution, when they occupied the town from 1776–79, but numerous 18th-century buildings remain. The period of ostentatious ‘summer cottage’ building is sometimes referred to as the Gilded Era.

The city is the annual summer venue for a number of music events, including the long-established Newport Jazz Festival, and Ben and Jerry's Folk Festival.
