Newport Beach

City in Orange County, southwestern California; population (1990) 66,600. It is located 61 km/38 mi southeast of Los Angeles, on the Balboa Peninsula, between Newport Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

The city of Newport Beach extends beyond the peninsula to occupy land around the bay, and also includes several islands, such as Lido and Linda isles and Balboa Island. Its 5.5 mi/9 km of sandy beaches and its yacht harbour have made it a popular and prosperous resort. Luxury hotels and seaside villas cater for tourists. The Corona del Mar district, east of the bay, and Balboa, on the peninsula, are especially well known. The city's manufactures include electronic equipment, computer software, plastics, and fibreglass boats, and it also contains financial and insurance concerns. Newport Bay plays host to yacht regattas and is the starting point of the annual Newport–Ensenada (Mexico) race.
