Newstead

Village in Nottinghamshire, England, 14 km/9 mi north of Nottingham, situated in Sherwood Forest; population (2001) 2,100. A colliery lies within the village. Newstead Abbey, founded by Henry II in the 12th century, was granted by Henry VIII to the Byron family, who held it until 1818 when the 6th Lord Byron (the poet) sold it. The house and gardens have since been restored.

Village in Scottish Borders unitary authority, Scotland, situated on the River Tweed, 2 km/1 mi east of Melrose. The remains of a series of Roman forts, the first built by Agricola's troops, have been excavated nearby. The site was named Trimontium (‘three mountains’) after the triple peaks of the neighbouring Eildon Hills.

Finds have included armour, weapons, altar stones, and coins. A monument now marks the area.
